by Diana Lindo
A former WAAF recalls her eventful wartime years as a sdtaff driver/chauffeur for high-ranking RAF officers and VIPs.

As a staff driver at the air Ministry in London the author got to know a number of high-ranking RAF and VIPs and travelled extensively around the UK at a time when only the privileged few were able to do so by road. Her reminiscences therefore provide an unusual perspective on wartime Britain.

As a WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) driver Diana Lindo clocked up thousands of miles in her trusty Hillman staff car during the years 1941-46, travelling the length and breadth of wartime Britain in the course of her duties, which involved transporting high-ranking RAF officers to a wide variety of locations in the execution of their duties.

Her passengers included former RAF nightfighter ace "Cat's Eyes" Cunningham in his subsequent role as an investigator of air crash sites wherever they happened the UK.

Her account of her experiences, the many important people she met and the unusual places she visited provides an interesting snapshot of the time.
